Hollywood is a treasure trove of the surprising and downright strange – even in the area of romance. We’ve gathered five of the industry’s most unlikely couples you never thought would ever date, but did. Sometimes the celebrities in question were involved in serious relationships. However, more often than not, unlikely couplings led to awkward one-date excursions, as was the case between Christian Bale and Drew Barrymore.
Tom Cruise and Cher
Despite the 16-year age difference, Tom Cruise and Cher actually truly dated in 1987. This was when she was at the peak of her career and he was just beginning what would become his A-lister status. Cher has since described Tom as a shy boy and had no money. The Grammy award winner admitted that she was crazy about him.
When asked specifically about Cruise, in bit of a kiss-and-tell about her famous love life, Cher did not hold back. “He was in the Top 5.” If she could turn back time, the “Believe” singer might still be dating the “Mission Impossible” actor. After the affair, Cher has since kept a quieter profile on her dating life while Cruise married his assistant, Emily Thomas. They eventually divorced and Tom moved on to a string of other marriages that also ended up in splits.
Colin Farrell and Elizabeth Taylor
Farrell dropped quite the bomb on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” telling the host and the audience that he and Taylor were in a relationship for nearly two years before she passed away. “It was the last kind of romantic relationship I had,” Farrell said, “which was never carried out. I just adored her. She was a spectacular, spectacular woman. I wanted to be her husband number eight, but we ran out of road.”
According to The Guardian, Farrell met Taylor when his son was being born. She was being treated in the same hospital. After running into her manager, he asked for his regards to be passed on. Farrell read the Gerard Manley Hopkins poem “The Leaden Echo” and “The Golden Echo” at Taylor’s funeral. He spoke later in 2011 about how much he missed her.

Nick Cannon and Kim Kardashian
Before Mariah Carey and Kanye West came along and stole their hearts, a fresh-faced Kim Kardashian and Nick Cannon dated from September 2006 to January 2007. Nick has revealed that he dumped Kim after she “lied” to him about the truth about her now-infamous scandalous video tape.
As reported by Daily Mail, Nick Cannon said that if she might have been honest with him he might have tried to hold her down and be like “That was before me.” He said she is a great girl and her family are some of the most incredible people he’s ever met in his life. Soon after Cannon ended his relationship with Kardashian in early 2007, the TV host began dating Mariah Carey.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Naomi Campbell
Back in 1995, London supermodel Naomi Campbell caught Leonardo DiCaprio’s eye. The fashion muse reportedly enjoyed a brief romance with the film star and producer. However, things quickly faded away, but the two became good friends. After more than 20 years later, they still get together to look hot on vacations, save elephants and Russian tigers, and photobomb 50 Cent, writes Elle.
Ryan Gosling and Sandra Bullock
Despite the 16-year age difference, chemistry worked when Ryan Gosling, then 22, and Sandra Bullock, then 38, worked on their thriller movie “Murder by Numbers” in 2002.
It was short-lived, though, as the two cut ties the following year. They have reportedly remained casual friends. “I had two of the greatest girlfriends of all time,” Gosling said. He was referring to Bullock and former girlfriend, Rachel McAdams.
The blonde heartthrob confirmed that he is in one committed relationship: film. The “Drive” actor claims that Hollywood is to blame for the end of his romances. Distance and work schedules just wouldn’t jive. Sources say that Sandra refers to Ryan as “the one that got away.”
In 2014, news that her former boyfriend was set to become a dad with his lover of three years, Eva Mendes, “devastated” Sandra, according to a friend, reports Dish Nation.
With a hefty influx of castings, glitzy industry parties and photo shoots, it’s inescapable that the paths of stars will cross. So it’s unsurprising that some will lead to temporary, if unlikely, ties. These couples you probably forgot were once a hot item. And when it comes to Hollywood romances, who can really keep track?
